We’re back with a bit of non-review specific fun in our next post. Reality Showis Adam Rifkin’s new satire show now airing on Showtime. With us today is Anton Troy and Clint Carmichael. We’ve also included a fully detailed synopsis of the show, pics, and a Reality Show trailer. Now you’ll have no excuse as to what all the fuss is about! Anton Troy is no stranger to Why So Blu – being featured in our Chillerama coverage and what not. It’s great to have him come back for a chat. Big ups to Clint, as well. Well, without further ado let’s see what the boys have to say, shall we? Let’s do it.

Interview:

Gerard Iribe: With us once again is the lovely and talented Anton Troy of Chillerama fame. Anton has company. Who’s your friend, Anton?

Anton Troy: Well first of all I would like to thank you Gerard for having us and also being such big Anton Troy supporters here at Why So Blu since the beginning. I have a fellow cast mate from the current Showtime show I am on, the very tall, very suave might I add veteran actor Mr. Clint Carmichael.

Clint Carmichael: Hey There!

Gerard Iribe: Let’s give our readers a bit of information. What is Reality Show and whom do you guys play?

Anton Troy: Clint you go first…

Clint Carmichael: It’s a dark satire on the preponderance of mindless reality shows that populate the TV landscape. It uses the form to poke fun at the phenomenon as well as the insanity of “Show Biz” in general. I play Leonard, the stern TV network president and Anton plays Burt, the young executive shark at my side when Mickey Wagner “Adam Rifkin” pitches us what he believes to be a revolutionary “Reality Show” concept. Our Network is tracking the project and growing more concerned as it proves to be anything but the dramatic juggernaut Mickey has promised.

Anton Troy: That’s right. Essentially the show follows a down on his luck reality show producer that believes he has come up with the MOTHER of all reality show concepts, an idea so original, so fantastic that it will completely reinvent the entire genre. He believes that if he selects a family completely at random and installs hidden cameras all over their house, work, job, car without their knowledge that they will act completely natural and that the drama will be more captivating than anything a team of writers could ever dream up. Unfortunately watching snails mate is more exciting than this family so he starts to unbeknownst to them introduce more drama into their lives in an effort to avoid being canned by the network. My character Burt is the smug Jr. TV network executive and actress Kendra Waldman, Clint and myself comprise the network team that Mickey “Adam Rifkin” has to answer to throughout the show, especially when the sizzles ain’t sizzlin! What’s cool about the show is it’s really an underlying commentary on society’s infatuation and disgust with voyeurism in my opinion.

Gerard Iribe: Jack-of-all-trades Adam Rifkin is the mastermind behind Reality Show. How did you guys get involved with Adam and Reality Show?

Anton Troy: Obviously I met Adam through my involvement in Chillerama and back around the same time the film was to be released the distributor was doing a drive-in movie road show in select cities to promote the movie. It was during this time, particularly during an appearance we did at a drive-in in Dixon IL that Adam and I just kind of got to hang out. As you know Adam directed a different segment of Chilleramathan I was in but we would run in to each other at various events and I had been told that he was a fan of my work in the movie. I later found out that even though he thought I was talented, the trip to Chicago together made him think of me as a cool guy and someone he would enjoy working with, ultimately leading to my very first role on a mainstream television network unlike Clint who’s respectably been around sinceMagnum P.I.! [Everyone Laughs]

Clint Carmichael: I got called in by the casting director and auditioned for the project just like any other job. I knew who Adam was but had never met him before, or any of his team.

Gerard Iribe: Honestly, I knew nothing of the show going in, but once I saw the trailer and how it was set in the “real world” and how it would essentially escalate into madness, knew that it could be something special. It’s got an edge. What are your feelings on reality shows in general? Do you guys think that they’ve gone too far in that they’ve embedded themselves in American society and culture so much so that some of the general public emulate their reality show heroes?

Anton Troy: As you know I have also been dabbling in producing as well lately and life does imitate art. Ironically I am currently in the process of producing a few reality show concepts with a friend of mine who produces for a major television network. My personal feeling on it is if the premise is interesting and you can learn something of value while being entertained then I think they have their place somewhere like anything else. For instance I rather enjoy shows like Pawn Stars and Monster Garage back in the day because I am learning about a trade or lifestyle and being entertained at the same time. Shows like that can be great when your just wanting an escape but don’t get me wrong I am an actor by trade and I take my craft as such very seriously. I am not a fan of ‘trash’ television nor do I think anyone should have Snookie as a role model.

Clint Carmichael: Like most actors, there’s a part of me that just hates all the crap being pushed out there on the public because it’s easier and cheaper than scripted drama and comedy. And yes, there are those lost souls who may model themselves on some of the silly nonsense they see. But, like everybody else, I can see that some of the reality world is really compelling and I totally get why they find an audience. For example; some of the singing competitions are fantastic, huge raw talent truly being discovered and given a shot at a career…the stuff that dreams are made of. Then there’s that mindless pabulum that Adam so ably mocks in our show. Producers pandering to our darker base instincts just to make a buck. I think people will really enjoy how Adam rips them a new one…I sure did! [Laughs]

Gerard Iribe: How was it to work with Adam Rifkin? Considering he was pulling several duties as in acting, directing, producing, writing, and what not – being busy would be an understatement.

Anton Troy: Rif as I know him is just really cool and easy-going on set. Yes just recently finishing my first effort producing a feature film myself I can very honestly say from experience that it’s a ton of work and a labor of love believe me! Rif is really a clever writer with a brilliant knack for edgy plots and dark humor and he is also a very funny actor and skilled director. Also the nerd factor did kick in, I was totally excited to work with him, I mean this is the same man that directed the KISS movie— Detroit Rock City, nuff said right Gerard! [Laughs]

Clint Carmichael: It’s amazing to watch. I worked with Bonnie Hunt on a pilot of hers a few years ago and it’s the only other time I acted with someone who was also directing us, had written the dialog we were speaking and was also producing the show. It’s rare to be able to wear that many hats. Bonnie was great at it, and Adam was terrific as well. Adam considers himself a writer first and is very humble about his acting chops. But he was really great on all levels…and stayed cool, calm and fun the whole time as well, not an easy feat! I thought it was inspiring to watch; he just stepped up and got it done.

Gerard Iribe: How was it working with the cast? I noticed that there are A LOT of people making special appearances on Reality Show – was it overwhelming for you guys?

Anton Troy: I noticed over 80 different characters on the call sheet but luckily I only had to work with a handful of very talented people that included Clint and Adam Rifkin. I did feel sorry for the wardrobe department though [Laughs].

Clint Carmichael: Our unit was the network team so I really didn’t see much of the rest of the cast. I was just happy Adam was throwing some weight behind the project, and knew that this was going to be a fun show to watch.

Gerard Iribe: Since the first season of Reality Show has wrapped, do you guys have any projects brewing that you can talk about here on WSB?

Anton Troy: I just wrapped a very funny romantic comedy that I produced and acted in called Wingman Inc.directed by Choice Skinner & written by Tony Germinario, It is set to release in 2013. As mentioned earlier I am producing a few television concepts that are in development but not to worry you will be seeing much of me in front of the camera over the next year as well. In the meantime make sure to check us out onReality Show!

Clint Carmichael: On the acting front I recently shot an episode of Reba McEntire’s new sitcom Malibu Country and I’m waiting to hear on a pilot presentation that’s being looked at by Starz called The Business. I get to play a corrupt D.A. in that show, always fun to play a bad guy. On the producing side, I’m developing a feature film that’s based on a very successful short film I produced with a director partner of mine. The project stars “Patrick Warburton” from Rules of Engagement it’s called The Action Hero’s Guide To Saving Lives.

Gerard Iribe: Do you guys have any social media outlets where your fans can congregate, visit, or just drop you guys a line? Twitter, Facebook, or a website?

Anton Troy: Of course! The usual suspects would be my website: www.antontroy.com / FB: antontroyofficial / Twitter: anton_troy and make sure to check out the Wingman Inc. page on IMDB

Clint Carmichael: You can find me on Facebook or visit my website www.clintcarmichael.com It’s terrific that social media can connect us all so effectively, I love hearing about what other people are doing in their work as well as appreciate the support for what I’m working on…please stop on by and say hi!

Gerard Iribe: Thanks again for spending some time with us, Anton! It’s always a pleasure to talk to you. Clint, likewise, it’s been a pleasure. Keep us posted with your work, guys! Tune in to Showtime Thursday nights and experience Reality Show for yourselves (check your local listings).

Please continue reading for information and a preview of what Reality is all about down below:

Synopsis:

Reality Show is the brainchild of Adam Rifkin, writer, director, executive producer and star of the show.

Reality Show follows Mickey Wagner (Rifkin), a down-on-his-luck reality show producer, as he crafts a sensational comeback. Fed up with how staged and phony reality shows are, Mickey hatches a revolutionary idea to pick an average American family and put them under all-encompassing surveillance…without the family’s knowledge.

The concept is to let real life unfold before the cameras. However, the family is boring. And the studio wants more sizzle. So Mickey starts to introduce drama into the unwitting family’s lives. Temptation to cheat, drinking, work problems…. chaos ensues. Everything unravels in a big, big way with shocking consequences.

The unwitting and unfortunate stars of the reality show are Dennis Warwick (Scott Anderson) a 50-year-old accountant and amateur chef, Katherine (Kelley Menighan Hensley), a retired teacher and stay-at-home mom, and their daughter, Amy (Monika Tilling), a high school honor roll student.

Mickey is convinced that if this family is unaware that cameras are following their every move, the natural drama of life that unfolds will be far more compelling than anything a team of Hollywood writers could manufacture.

Thanks to state-of-the-art identity software that cross references DMV records, passport records, credit card records, etc., Mickey gets the perfect all-American family: the Warwicks.

Mickey and his team are elated. He couldn’t have cast a more ideal family if he tried. After covertly setting up countless hidden cameras throughout their house, cars, and at Dennis’s work, along with a team of follow-vehicles armed with long lens video cams and a fleet of surveillance vans, the Warwicks are now, unknowingly, smack dab in the middle of Mickey’s electronic fishbowl. Now all Mickey has to do is wait for all the secrets and lies to emerge!

But Mickey soon realizes that this family he was so certain about is absolutely, mind-numbingly dull. Turns out, there are no secrets, no lies, no double lives. The Warwick family is completely void of any discernible conflict, and as everyone knows, conflict is the cornerstone of drama.

In a desperate attempt to salvage his series and keep the impatient network happy, Mickey begins to interfere. By introducing obstacles and conflict into the family’s life, Mickey quickly finds that betraying his original conceit and messing with his subjects makes for a far more fascinating show. These small disruptions escalate and soon cause ripples Mickey does not anticipate.

REALITY SHOW is a darkly satirical new series that follows the exploits of reality television show producer Micky Wagner and his amoral attempt to re-invent the reality genre. Fed up with how staged and phony all reality shows are, Mickey’s revolutionary idea is to pick an average American family and put them under all encompassing surveillance…without their knowledge. He’s convinced that if they are unaware that cameras are following their every move, the natural drama of life that unfolds will be far more compelling than anything a team of Hollywood writers could manufacture. Unfortunately Mickey soon realizes that the family he picked is boring. In a desperate attempt to salvage the show and keep the network happy, Mickey begins to interfere. By introducing obstacles and conflict into the family’s life, Mickey quickly finds that betraying his original conceit and messing with his subjects makes for a far more fascinating show. Unfortunately for the family, they have no idea why they are suddenly besieged with so much bad luck. As the show gets better, the family starts to disintegrate and their lives begin to spiral downward. As things continue to get darker and darker Mickey rationalizes that all will be ok in the end, for once the episodes begin airing, fame will heal all the wounds caused by his morally bankrupt meddling. REALITY SHOW is an indictment of a medium that we are all equal parts fascinated and repulsed by.

Dream Street is an amazing organization that takes children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend a summer camp due to an illness and brings them all out and gives them the time of their lives. I can’t say enough great things about Dream Street but all I can say is organizations like this make you stand in awe at the inherent goodness of humanity and make you forget about all your little problems and insecurities. That was my experience with the children / faculty of Dream Street, they gave to me as much if not more joy as I hopefully gave to them. Thank you Dream Street Foundation for your dedication to excellence and the enrichment of all of our souls through selfless service to our fellow man. There are also many simple ways you can personally become part of the creation of magic and hope in a child’s life through support of the Dream Street Foundation by reading more about Dream Street below.

Here is a brief synopsis of “Alexus”:

Anton stars as Gideon, an impulsive, brooding undercover detective, who, along with his watchful veteran partner Daniels (Skinner) must infiltrate the stronghold of Russian kingpin Ivan (George Vincent) to recover a mysterious package from what appears to be a routine drug deal. Everything goes smoothly until Gideon is gunned down and nearly killed during an unsuccessful negotiation. In the encounter, the thugs become suspicious and want to know what’s so special about their newly intercepted merchandise. Awakening in a pool of blood, and driven by a rage for justice, Gideon is forced to sacrifice everything — including the love of his life, his partner and his sanity — in a desperate effort to retrieve a package that he alone knows is far more precious than himself and maybe even the world.

Culture Clash: The Adventures of CHILLERAMA’s Anton Troy & DEXTER composer Daniel Licht at the Russian Horror Awards – Parts 1 & 2

Britgeek here.

I last spoke with actor Anton Troy back in January along with his co-star Sean Paul Lockhart to discuss their roles in I WAS A TEENAGE WEREBEAR, Tim Sullivan’s segment of last year’s critically-acclaimed anthology film, CHILLERAMA. It was for that very role, as well as Troy’s appearance in FILTH TO ASHES, FLESH TO DUST, that he was plucked right from the glowing sunshine of Los Angeles, along with DEXTER composer Daniel Licht, and dropped into the middle of Moscow in the dead of winter. The reason? To collect his award at the Second Annual Russian Horror Awards, also known quite simply as The Blob, which is supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russian Cinematography Union.

Troy and Licht were joined by fellow nominees from across the globe whose contributions to horror have all been well received by Russian genre fans. Those also receiving awards were horror legends Stuart Gordon (RE-ANIMATOR) and Lloyd Kaufman (THE TOXIC AVENGER), writer/director/producer Tim Sullivan (2001 MANIACS, CHILLERAMA), actress Jodelle Ferland (THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, SILENT HILL, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE), HAPPY TREE FRIENDS creator Kenn Navaro, SAUNA director AJ Annila, and Kare Hedebrant and Lina Leanderson, the young stars of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Last year’s award winners include Robert Englund and Jeffrey Combs.

For Troy and Licht, representing the USA in Russia proved to be quite the hard task. With not only the extreme cold to deal with but the language barrier, mistranslations and impromptu music compositions, the award-winning young actor and experienced composer found themselves in a country they never thought they’d visit for an experience they’d never forget.

In this two-part look at their trip halfway across the globe, they share their stories, shedding light on a genre in a country with a film industry that we hear so little about in the Western world.

BRITGEEK: So, the Russian Horror Awards.

DANIEL LICHT: It was definitely an interesting trip. A once in a lifetime trip.

ANTON TROY: Yeah. It was crazy because we both got contacted, I mean Dan can tell you how he was contacted, but I got contacted because I have a Russian publicist and obviously he knew about it, and they flew us all halfway around the world, MORTAL KOMBAT style. They had quite a few of us on a plane, and Dan was on the plane … he was kind of walking around – ’cause it was a really long flight – like doing exercises or something [laughs].

DL: Yeah.

AT: I didn’t know who he was at the time, but I was like, ‘Oh, that guy seems interesting,’ and then Jodelle Ferland, who did SILENT HILL and was in TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE and also is in THE CABIN IN THE WOODS right now, she was there with her mother, sitting behind us. Same thing, I was like, ‘Oh, she’s interesting,’ [laughs]. So basically they flew us halfway around the world, like six different I guess you could say actors, directors, composers, sort of like a mish-mash of people from all different places. So you had people from Canada, you had the people from the US being myself and Dan, and then Jodelle’s from Canada, there was two Swedish actors from that cult film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, the original one, and then there was AJ Annila, who’s the Finnish director of the movie SAUNA. And like I said, it was kind of like very MORTAL KOMBAT style, ’cause they took us all around and put us on an island to fight to the death [laughs].

DL: That’s right. Yeah, we all fought over caviar.

AT: [laughs] And vodka.

DL: Yeah, vodka.

AT: But it’s like Dan said, it was an interesting experience ’cause it’s not something we would have necessarily done unless I guess they’d invited us. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Russia in the dead of winter.

DL: [laughs] It’s funny ’cause they approached me through my website. A lot of the time I was wondering if I was being scammed. Identity theft, you know. We ended up sending copies of our passports and thinking, ‘Wow, this could all be just made up.’

AT: [laughs] New celebrity scam hits Hollywood.

BG: It sounds like HOSTEL, except they sent you into deepest, darkest Russia.

DL: Yeah.

AT: [laughs] It kind of was like HOSTEL at times, I gotta admit [laughs].

DL: It was. You know, it was interesting because they contacted us they said, ‘Oh, you’re gonna have bodyguards.’

AT: And private cars.

DL: I was like, ‘Wow, bodyguards,’ I guess it’s rougher than I thought it was.

BG: [laughs] Yeah.

AT: Yeah, that was my thought when they first said bodyguards, I was like, ‘Oh, what do I need a bodyguard for?” and then I thought, ‘Well that’s really cool,’ [laughs]. But who would try to kill me, you know?

DL: I presumed it was for the throngs of soundtrack fans [who would be] storming the cars.

BG: I guess you should be flattered if anyone tried to kill you.

AT: What else did they promise us, Dan? Oh yeah, luxury apartments.

DL: And all meals.

AT: Oh yeah, we got to go to this cool private restaurant that looked like it was ran by the mafia or something like that, and we could order what we wanted, but the downside was for breakfast they gave us all this card for a continental breakfast at some place we couldn’t find. And I guess Dan actually went, what was that like?

DL: It was okay. It was like their McDonald’s, kind of. Like a bagel house. But not to complain too much, it was a great trip. It was interesting, it was fun. The fans are very loyal there, wouldn’t you say, Anton?

AT: Yeah, well, the thing was, when we first got there, the actual awards ceremony was three days. We had to do a combination of press conferences, the awards ceremony [and] a master class with the press and fans … The master class was really interesting ’cause it was probably like in the blingiest [sic] theatre I’ve ever seen, supposedly they charge like 100 dollars a seat to sit in this theatre.

DL: Yeah.

AT: And there’s these really huge, cushy reclining chairs with like full-size TV dinner tables [laughs] and they sent us to a table with water bottles like monkeys in a cage while everybody kind of just asked us questions. But the awards ceremony itself was quite fascinating ’cause once we got there, we were all extremely jet-lagged and they were pretty much rolling us around in freezing cold, like, you can’t believe how cold it is in Russia to begin with, I mean it’s kind of like the perfect place to hold the Russian Horror Awards ’cause it’s got old creepy buildings and it’s really cold and overcast and [has] a lot of interesting looking characters … They just kept running us the whole day, so when we got there we were jet-lagged and whatnot and they took us straight to a club that night where we had a pre-party. And all our names were in Russian on the poster and they had this whole extravagant circus act, right?

DL: That was after we had done the interviews [laughs].

AT: Right, right.

DL: We got off the plane and they took us to dinner, then they took us to do a panel, and this is after we had been on a plane for 28 hours, I think. Everything was in Russian so we were all kind of nodding out until we got a question to us, you know. We had no idea what anyone was saying.

AT: And they had us at this little tiny table inside of a Hyundai dealership or something like that, I don’t know why they picked that, but they took us downstairs, there was this little panel just packed with press and then, like Dan said, we don’t know what’s going on half the time because we can’t understand anything, and you have the moderator speaking Russian, blah blah blah blah, and people would laugh and we were just kind of like, ‘Haha… we don’t know what they’re laughing at,’ but we’d sit there and answer questions and just get like these hordes of fans bringing stuff up afterwards like pictures of us I haven’t even seen [laughs].

DL: I thought it was funny ’cause they were having me sign bootlegged downloaded CDs [laughs]. Why not?

AT: Well I guess that’s huge in Russia as far as I understand. While we were there we found out there’s like these shops in a lot of the tram stations and stuff and that’s all they have, bootleg DVDs and things like that. So it’s like you go in there and try to find your movie and then you get kind of angry about it, but then you’re like, ‘Ah, I’m not going to say anything ’cause someone will pop me off here,’ [laughs].

DL: Right.

BG: You’re big in Russia.

AT: Well, I think Dan’s a lot bigger than I am in Russia, I’m kind of like the newbie, especially with CHILLERAMA and stuff like that. CHILLERAMA’s sort of a new concept and it’s kind of a niche film anyway, so it was interesting to see how Russians react to that film. Tim Sullivan is actually pretty popular in Russia ’cause 2001 MANIACS, I believe, screened in Russia – actually had a theatrical release – like five years ago or something and was one of the top five films.

BG: Yeah, it reached number five at the box office.

DL: Jodelle was the star among us.

AT: Yeah, Jodelle Ferland definitely had the most fans. She’s done a lot of stuff like TWILIGHT, obviously, and movies like that, and even SILENT HILL is really big. Dan did the music for the new SILENT HILL, right, Dan?

DL: The video game. Two new video games, yeah. Jodelle was in the first movie.

AT: Yeah, she was in the movie, so everyone wanted a piece of Jodelle, and when I got there I think people were really intrigued by me and also some people were familiar with the film, but it was more so like I was the new guy, which I was okay with. But when we actually got to the awards ceremony, which was the second night, one of the things that was really interesting about the whole Russian experience is the language gap, ’cause they hurdled us into cabs and were driving us around, and then once we actually got to the awards ceremony itself it was in this really old, cool building and they had this whole full-on awards ceremony with a host and hostess and they were telling jokes like at the Oscars, but you have no idea what’s going on half the time until they’re like, ‘Blah blah blah, Anton Troy!” and everybody’s clapping and you’re like, ‘Oh crap, I gotta get up!’ and then we’d run to the stage.

DL: Right.

AT: So that was a little hair-raising. But there was a lot of funny stuff that happened as far as the actual translations, ’cause even when I went up to accept my award, I had a translator up there and you kind of have to speak and then you stop, they translate what you say, which is sort of interesting, and you keep talking, going on this huge monologue, but one of the things I said was, ‘I’d like to thank my Russian publicist whom I call Mikey Moscow,’ to which she translated to the audience, ‘I would like to thank Russian Mickey Mouse,’ [laughs]. I can imagine what they were thinking, ‘Who is this new guy thanking Russian Mickey Mouse?’ And the ceremony was really weird ’cause we were sitting there and it was sort of surreal and then you had people [from] the year before us like Costas Mandylor from the SAW movies and things like that, and Dan and I are sitting there with our families and whatnot and then they had these really elaborate acts in between. At one point, there was a chihuahua pushing a cart across a table, like randomly.

DL: [laughs] Yeah, a bird stand thing. There were circus tricks, like THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW all of a sudden. But it was completely normal, evidently this is very common in Russia, to have a circus act come in during the intermission.

AT: Yeah, it was like Cirque du Soleil or something, and then there was this almost like striptease act in the middle, too, which I enjoyed[laughs].

DL: Yeah.

AT: But it was so wild. Another thing about it, too, was like… I said the immense cold was very challenging at times, but it was really amazing how I guess excited these Russian horror fans were. You go halfway across the world for something like that and they’re so enthusiastic and they know who you are and are really hip on the culture and stuff like that, it’s really interesting.

DL: It’s exciting for them because horror films were not legal during the Soviet era. You could only make happy films. I guess they were worried that horror films would be too analogous to any kind of oppression, so the horror film industry in Russia is fairly new and so there’s a lot of excitement among the youth about that, kind of in the same way that rock ‘n’ roll became exciting when [people] were allowed to play it.

AT: Yes. There were a lot of young people at the event, you get all kinds of different people, like Dan said. I had the pleasure of seeing some of the classic Russian, probably Soviet-era, films on the bullet train[laughs]. There was some kind of Peter Pan theme or something like that.

DL: That’s right.

AT: So they showed us around for a couple of days and on the very last day, when we did the master class, we were sitting in there answering questions for the press and a couple of interesting things happened. You did an on-the-spot composition, right, Dan?

DL: I did. Someone said, ‘Oh, you specialise in making music with odd instruments. Can you make some music with something that you have up on stage?’ So I ended up beating on something and blowing in a bottle.

AT: [laughs] Well, he did it totally on the fly. I was impressed.

BG: From when you were first invited, how long was it before you were on the plane? I remember reading it on your Facebook page, Anton. You suddenly posted a random update like, ‘Oh, I’m going on a plane tomorrow, to Russia to accept an award,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, okay!’

AT: [laughs] My Russian publicist was trying to bribe me to go for a while, ’cause originally he was like, ‘Oh, you should go, there’s this awards ceremony and I think it would be awesome and people would be excited to see you,’ and all that, and at first, this idea of going to Russia was kind of like, yeah right, you know [laughs] … I would say it was… gosh, Dan, you can probably help me out on this, what, like six months at least?

DL: Oh, yeah, they contacted in the summer, I think. It was June.

AT: I found out later on in the year, I was the last addition to the celebrity guests. It was definitely a while and it took me a while to confirm, but it came down to [it being] a once in a lifetime opportunity to go somewhere like that, and Russia as well is a really interesting country to visit, especially for something like an event like this ’cause it is quite different… the alphabet is different, the extreme weather, things just operate a lot differently. It is harder to do some things in Russia, for instance Dan and I had a lot of trouble getting tickets for the train ’cause the website wouldn’t work, or we’d have to go a lot of places on foot, so it really was sort of like going to a safari in ice [laughs].

DL: Yeah, but we even had a Russian person go with us yet it still took all day to get a train ticket. It was crazy [laughs].

AT: Yeah, if we didn’t have somebody that was following us around all the time, I think we might have died [laughs].

DL: Yeah.

BG: You wouldn’t have made it back.

AT: And people would be like, ‘Whatever happened to them?’ [laughs].

DL: It’s not tourist friendly. It’s challenging because a lot of the signs are in a language you can’t even read, and even if you had a book it wouldn’t help you.

AT: Yeah, you couldn’t figure what they said.

DL: It keeps you on your toes.

AT: It was a really great experience because a lot of us became good friends while we were there and got to see not only what’s popular in the US, ’cause Dan and myself know the US game, but going somewhere like there and learning more about the other people, like AJ Anilla and people like that from different parts of the world, and seeing what’s popular in Russia and Europe as far as horror films go and sci-fi, and also how fans sort of relate to that, but how they crave this American cinema and they crave these imports from a faraway land.

DL: Stuart Gordon won an award in absentia, right?

AT: Yeah, that’s true. It was also Tim Sullivan who won an honourary award and also Lloyd Kaufman received an honourary award, but they all sent video submissions ’cause they couldn’t make it in person, but it was really like an honour in some ways because it was like sticking what they felt was the best from different regions of the world and sort of bringing us all together.

BG: Yeah. So did you receive your awards for specific projects or just generally your contributions to horror?

DL: Well, I got my award for SILENT HILL, but also just in general for Stephen King’s THINNER … Horror Composer of the Year Award.

BG: Oh right, excellent.

AT: And mine was an honourary award for CHILLERAMA, but also same thing, just recognising me as a rising star in the genre.

BG: The new blood.

DL: Yeah.

AT: New blood, exactly.

BG: Obviously you have become good friends with your fellow recipients, but were you guys familiar with any of their work beforehand?

DL: No, not really. I wasn’t familiar with Jodelle, except I had seen the pictures of her on the SILENT HILL movie poster. She was the little girl on the SILENT HILL movie poster.

AT: Obviously I know DEXTER, the television show, and when I found out who Dan was I made a connection that way, but the other people like AJ, that was a first for me. The LET THE RIGHT ONE IN kids were new to me. Jodelle I knew, even though it didn’t register at first, I’d seen SILENT HILL a long time ago and actually thought it was really cool, I really liked that movie, but she was a lot smaller [laughs]. She’s like a woman now, so I didn’t put it together that way but it really was amazing … When you get brought together with all these different people and you’re sort of learning about each other, kind of like a film, sometimes you’ll do a film and then you’ll learn more about the director and what he’s done, and be like, ‘Oh, he did that? I loved that movie,’ or something like that, and we’re all together and we started to take more interest, I think, in everybody’s work, like opened our eyes, so I really want to see LET THE RIGHT ONE IN now and it’s been remade, that’s cool. It must have been really good to have been remade, right?[laughs] So you kind of get interested that way. It was cool because I got to come back to the States after cultivating these friendships and I go to Dan’s studio and listen to DEXTER music in the studio [laughs]. Which was the ultimate guilty nerd pleasure.

The Man Behind the Beast Mock-Doc Rears its Head! A Look at Werebears’ Anton Troy

A couple of weeks ago we interviewed Chillerama‘s Anton Troy and promised to release his anticipated mockumentary, which will surely extend the fun of the Chillerama experience. The moment is now – Dread Central is ready to exclusively premiere the project Anton’s been working on for the last two months with co-creator and friend Roy Tighe.

Horror is familiar ground for newcomer Anton Troy, who also starred in this year’s slasher Filth to Ashes, Flesh to Dust, but the Las Vegas-raised James Dean-esque actor is ready to sink his fangs into some more comedy with Anton Troy, the Man Behind the Beast directed by Roy Tighe, who was dragged by Anton to all the promotional events collecting footage. Together they created a piece that’s based on the idea that one day Troy may turn into Hollywood’s next best thing – all thanks to his tagline “Tastes like chicken, huh, babe?” from Tim Sullivan’s “I Was A Teenage Werebear” segment of Chillerama. We don’t want to give too much away, but there’s a lot to look out for like guest appearances by the likes of horror veterans Kane Hodder, Ray Wise and Lin Shaye; directors Tim Sullivan, Joe Lynch, Adam Green and Adam Rifkin; and Anton’sChillerama co-star Sean Paul Lockhart, plus more.

According to Troy, “I wanted to expand the fans’ experience of Chillerama; this is our gift to them.”

Watch the exclusive premiere of the mock-doc below our interview with Roy Tighe.

DC: Tell us a little bit about yourself, Roy. How did you start making viral videos and mockumentaries?

Roy Tighe: I’m from a small remote town of 6,000 people in northern Canada called Fort Frances, Ontario. I just couldn’t picture myself married by 20, kids by 25, alcoholic by 30, divorced by 40 and on the verge of suicide by 50 so I left! [Laughs] I attended the Film and Television program at Capilano College in Vancouver, and I eventually started writing and producing my own projects so that I would have my own platform where I could act and create. When Anton and I met to talk about doing this project together, I already had a vision for what I thought we should do. Anton said we need a concept, it can’t just be about him being famous, and I asked what one-liners he said in the movie. He said a few of them, one of which was “Tastes like chicken, huh, babe?” and I was like that’s it! I simply think mockumentaries are funny. The actors have to play a character that is actually a real person like in a documentary. So for me, I find characters funnier in mockumentaries than in traditional comedies because they have more freedom to experience the world that has been created. Everything is being perceived as in the moment, and there are no limits to what the story or character can say or do or what can happen – just like in real life.

DC: What makes a good viral video?

RT: Uh, two girls and one cup… just kidding… I don’t know. I just try to be honest with my work, myself and the fellow people I work with. I try not to worry about what makes things good or not. I just do what I believe is funny and grow from it, good or bad. I stay open-minded throughout the process.

DC: What was your experience like working with Anton on this mockumentary? Was it fun? Was it tiring?

RT: Anton and I worked very well together, and I had a great time working with him on this project. I got to meet the directors of Chillerama and work with other very talented artists like Anton, and that’s something I really enjoy. Of course it was tiring at times. Neither of us were happy with the first cut I put together, and I felt like I let us down. Then we were forced to step away for a week because I had to head back to Vancouver for another shoot, leaving both of us feeling the pressure of time to have the video done on schedule. We were both feeling very stressed and overworked due to multiple projects that I’m currently working on and with Anton so busy promoting Chillerama. But at the end of the day, that week away from our project gave us a nice break to get re-motivated and create something that we’re happy with. We believe we have something the fans will really enjoy. The nice thing about working with Anton is the respect and friendship that we’ve built through this project. I have a great passion for creativity, and it’s refreshing to work with a guy like Anton who shares this passion. He’s the type of guy who is there for his friends and deeply wants the projects he works on to be the best they can. Also, being a young filmmaker witnessing what the directors of Chillerama have done justified for me that hard work and determination pay off when you keep at it. So all and all I definitely had an awesome experience and will hopefully get the chance to work with everyone again in the future.

DC: Should we expect more Anton/Roy collaborations in the future? Do you plan to release unused material from this mockumentary at any point?

RT: Yeah! You should definitely expect more from Anton and me. I think we made a great team on this project, and I personally think he’s a very talented actor. Yes, we talked about releasing unused material as we have so much amazing footage that we couldn’t use because of time restraints, but I guess you’ll have to stay tuned to find out. You can follow Anton and me on Twitter and Facebook or on our websites here and here. Check ‘em out to keep up with all our news and future projects.
